In short: The Sump Pump Battery Backup Kit keeps your main sump pump running when the power goes out. A Luxpower LXP6K 6 kW split-phase inverter runs the pump circuit from a Maple Leaf Beaver Heated 48V LiFePO4 battery, kept outdoors in an insulated, IP65 waterproof Maple Leaf Mountie cabinet, and switches to battery automatically in an outage. One battery gives a typical 1/2 HP pump about 4.7 hours of actual pumping, or roughly 18 hours of storm when the pump runs 15 minutes an hour. Choose two batteries to double that, and add four or eight 550W+ solar panels on a Maple Leaf Goose ground mount to recharge from the sun during long outages. From $4,471.99 CAD, 10% off the regular price of the parts, supported and repaired by Solar Power Store Canada in Barrie, Ontario.

Why this kit instead of a 12 V backup pump?

  • Runs your existing main pump at full capacity. There is no smaller second pump to fall behind during a heavy storm.
  • Handles big pumps. The 6 kW inverter has room for 1/2 HP and larger pumps, plus your fridge, furnace fan and internet.
  • Long-life lithium. The Beaver Heated battery is rated for 6,000+ cycles, with no topping up and no fumes.
  • Built for Canadian winters. The batteries live outdoors in the insulated, IP65 waterproof Mountie cabinet, rated down to -40°C, and the Beaver's built-in heater works from -25°C.
  • Grows with you. Add batteries (the Mountie holds up to six), choose the solar option, or add up to 8,000 W of solar panels later.

How long will it run your sump pump?

Hours of actual pumping = usable battery kWh × 1,000 ÷ your pump's running watts. Typical running watts from utility generator-sizing charts are about 800 W for a 1/3 HP sump pump and 1,050 W for a 1/2 HP pump. For larger pumps, check the nameplate (volts × amps).

Pump (running watts) 1 Beaver (4.92 kWh) 2 Beavers (9.84 kWh)
Typical 1/3 HP (800 W) 6.2 hours 12.3 hours
Typical 1/2 HP (1,050 W) 4.7 hours 9.4 hours
Larger pump (1,500 W) 3.3 hours 6.6 hours

Sump pumps cycle on and off, so the battery lasts much longer than these pumping hours: a 1/2 HP pump that runs 15 minutes an hour uses about 0.26 kWh an hour, so one Beaver covers roughly 18 hours of storm, less the inverter's own standby use.

How it works

  1. Every day: grid power runs your pump through the inverter and keeps the battery charged.
  2. Power outage: the inverter switches the pump circuit to battery automatically.
  3. Power back: the battery recharges from the grid, or from solar panels if you add them.

Add solar panels (optional)

Choose the solar option to add four or eight 550W+ bifacial panels (about 2.2 or 4.4 kW) on a Maple Leaf Goose ground mount. Each group of four panels connects as one string to one of the LXP6K's two solar inputs, inside its 120 to 385 V operating range and its 17 A and 4,000 W per-input limits. In full sun, four panels can recharge one Beaver battery in roughly 3 hours, and eight panels can recharge two Beavers in about the same time, so your pump keeps running through a multi-day outage when the sun is out. Output is much lower on cloudy winter days, when the grid stays the main charger. The Goose mount tilts from 30° to 60° (set it steep in winter to shed snow), hurricane kits rate it for winds up to 105 mph, and it carries a 25-year warranty. With four panels, you can add a second string of four later.

Pre-order: the Goose ground mounts are on pre-order, with estimated arrival March 2027. We ship the battery kit now, so your pump is protected right away, and send the solar panels and Goose mounts when they arrive. Foundation blocks or ground screws are not included.

Installation

The inverter connects to your pump's circuit, so installation needs a licensed electrician, an electrical permit and an inspection (ESA in Ontario). The batteries go outdoors in the Mountie cabinet. In Canada, battery storage like this can't be installed in a basement. Mount the inverter indoors on a wall near your electrical panel, above any flood level (it is rated for 0°C to 50°C), and keep a high-water alarm in the pit. With the solar option, the Goose mounts also need a foundation, such as concrete blocks or ground screws. We ship the kit to you or directly to the homeowner, or we can help arrange the installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this kit run my existing sump pump?

Yes. It powers your main pump's circuit. Typical 1/3 HP pumps run at about 800 W and 1/2 HP pumps at about 1,050 W, with a start-up surge of about twice that, well within the 6 kW inverter. For pumps over 1 HP or two large pumps, ask us about the 12 kW SNA 12K kit.

How many batteries do I need?

One battery suits most homes with a single pump. Choose two for a larger pump, frequent long outages, or if you also want the fridge and furnace fan on backup. The Mountie holds up to six Beavers, so ask us if you want more.

Does it work in a Canadian winter?

Yes. The batteries go outdoors in the insulated Mountie cabinet, which protects them down to -40°C, and the Beaver Heated battery's built-in heater works from -25°C so it can charge in the cold.

Can the batteries go in my basement?

No. In Canada, battery storage like this can't be installed in a basement. That's why the kit includes the Mountie, an insulated, waterproof cabinet that sits outside. The inverter mounts indoors, on a wall near your electrical panel and above any flood level.

Can I add solar panels?

Yes. Choose the solar option for four or eight 550W+ panels on a Goose ground mount (pre-order, estimated arrival March 2027; the battery kit ships now), or add panels later: the LXP6K accepts up to 8,000 W of solar input. Panels recharge the batteries during long outages and cut your bills the rest of the time.

Do I need an electrician?

Yes. Connecting an inverter to your home's wiring needs a licensed electrician, an electrical permit and an inspection (ESA in Ontario). We can help arrange the installation.

Who supports and repairs the kit?

We do. Our team in Barrie, Ontario supports and repairs the Luxpower and Maple Leaf equipment in this kit.
