Here's what you need to know about solar equipment certifications in Canada.
Why Solar Equipment Certification Matters
Your solar panels, inverter, batteries, and other electrical components become part of your home's electrical system. They need to meet applicable Canadian safety requirements and be approved for their intended use.
This is especially important for electrical and energy-storage equipment, where proper testing helps address risks such as electrical faults, overheating, fire, and equipment failure.
In Ontario, electrical installations are subject to inspection through the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). ESA maintains a list of recognized certification and field-evaluation marks for electrical products and equipment.
The real cost of uncertified equipment
Imagine purchasing a low-cost lithium battery because the specifications look impressive and the price is hard to beat. Then you discover that the battery isn't appropriately certified for your installation.
Instead of saving money, you could end up needing to:
- Replace the battery with approved equipment

Does Solar Equipment Need to Have a CSA Logo?
Canadian electrical equipment does not necessarily need to carry a CSA logo specifically.
What matters is that the equipment has been appropriately certified or evaluated for the Canadian market by a recognized organization and meets the applicable requirements.
The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) accredits organizations involved in product certification and field evaluation. ESA also publishes recognized certification and field-evaluation marks that can be used to demonstrate equipment approval in Ontario.
That's why you may encounter several different certification marks on legitimate solar equipment.
CSA
CSA Group is one of the best-known Canadian standards and testing organizations.
CSA certification is widely recognized across Canada, and CSA marks can appear on a wide range of electrical and solar equipment.
cUL / ULC
UL Solutions provides certification for products intended for the Canadian market.
Look carefully at the mark. A Canadian UL certification mark includes the "C" designation, indicating that the product has been certified to applicable Canadian requirements. UL identifies the Canadian cUL mark as part of its Canada Safety Scheme.
You may also encounter ULC marks associated with Underwriters Laboratories of Canada.

ETL
ETL certification is provided by Intertek.
ETL-listed products can be certified against applicable safety standards, including Canadian requirements. The important thing isn't simply seeing the letters "ETL", you need to verify that the product's certification applies to Canada and the intended application.
ESA's recognized certification-mark resources include Intertek and a wide range of other recognized certification organizations.
What about CE?
A CE mark by itself should not be treated as proof that electrical equipment is approved for installation in Canada.
CE marking relates to European regulatory requirements and is not a substitute for Canadian electrical certification or evaluation. So if you're shopping online and the only certification mark you can find is CE, stop and investigate before purchasing.
Solar Panel Certifications
For photovoltaic modules, one important standard to look for is:
CSA C22.2 No. 61730
This standard addresses solar panel safety requirements, including electrical and fire-related safety considerations.
The certification mark on the physical panel is important, but it's also worth keeping the manufacturer's datasheet and certification documentation with your project records.
This documentation can help your installer and inspector verify that the equipment is appropriate for the installation.

Solar Inverter Certifications: Grid-Tied vs. Off-Grid
The inverter is often described as the "brain" of a solar power system because it converts and manages the electrical energy produced by the system.
But the certification requirements can depend on how your inverter will be used.
Grid-Tied and Grid-Interactive Inverters
If your solar system is physically connected to the electrical grid, your inverter needs to be approved for grid-interactive operation.
This applies whether you're:
- Sending excess solar power to the grid
- Using net metering
- Using solar primarily for load displacement
- Combining solar with battery storage while remaining grid-connected
A commonly applicable inverter safety standard is CSA C22.2 No. 107.1, while grid interconnection requirements are addressed through applicable Canadian standards, including CSA C22.3 No. 9.
Off-Grid Inverters
Off-grid systems don't have the same utility interconnection requirements because they aren't connected to the electrical grid. But that doesn't mean certification isn't important.
An off-grid inverter still needs to meet applicable Canadian electrical safety requirements for its intended application: CSA C22.2 No. 107.1

Battery Certifications

UL 1973: Battery Safety
UL 1973 is a safety standard for batteries used in stationary applications and other applications covered by the standard.
Testing evaluates the battery system against electrical, mechanical, and thermal safety requirements.
But don't assume that a lithium battery is safe just because it has a built-in BMS.
A Battery Management System (BMS) is an important part of a modern battery, but having a BMS doesn't automatically mean the complete battery product has been appropriately certified.
The certification of the actual battery product matters.

UL 9540A: A Test, Not a Certification
UL 9540A is a test method, not a product certification.
It is used to evaluate the fire and thermal runaway characteristics of battery energy storage systems.
The testing helps determine how a battery system behaves under thermal runaway conditions and whether fire or thermal events can propagate.
That's valuable information when assessing energy-storage safety, but it's important to understand what the certification actually means.
UL 9540: Energy Storage System Certification
UL 9540 applies to energy storage systems as an integrated system.
Rather than looking only at an individual battery, system-level evaluation considers the complete energy-storage solution and how its components operate together.
Depending on the system, this can include components such as:
- Batteries
- Inverters
- Battery management systems
- Energy management equipment
- Other associated controls
This distinction matters because a collection of individually certified components isn't necessarily the same thing as a certified energy-storage system.
Compatibility and system-level approval matter.
